Photographers at any stage in their careers are invited to participate in the Photomonth Portfolio Review. This is an excellent opportunity for photographers to discuss their current and future projects and receive critical feedback from experienced professionals.

KARIN ANDREASSON Features Picture Editor - Guardian

BA Fine Art, Central St Martins, MA History of Photography, Birkbeck. 10 years working at the Guardian - across the newspaper and website, including picture editor on The Guide, acting deputy picture editor Weekend, and now Features picture editor (G2 print and online). Prior to the Guardian I worked on picture desks at NME and the Evening Standard and other publications.

 

SOPHIE BATTERBURY Picture Editor – The i Newspaper

Sophie Batterbury’s career in photojournalism began in the Independent darkroom in 1989, where a keen interest in photography became the passion that it is today. She went on to become Head of Pictures at Independent Newspapers where her responsibilities covered The Independent, The Independent on Sunday and the ‘i’. She frequently judges competitions and reviews portfolios which she finds is a great way of seeing new work.

 

MALCOLM DICKSON Director – Street Level Photoworks

Malcolm Dickson is a writer, curator and organiser. He is the Director of Street Level Photoworks, a leading photography arts organisation that provides artists and the public with a range of opportunities to make and engage with photography. He curates and co-ordinates a programme which embraces different genres of photography, which is extended through a network of local and community venues, regional art galleries, and through national and international partners. This is amplified in Scotland’s Season of Photography which links the diverse exhibitions and events around photography across the country, and which is the result of a partnership in The Institute for Photography in Scotland which Street Level are closely involved in alongside national partners such as Stills (Edinburgh), Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and the special photography collections at the Universities of St Andrews and Glasgow:

 

Recent exhibitions curated by him include ‘A Window on Glasgow’ and work by Yohanne Lamoulere and Franck Pourcel as part of a Glasgow/Marseille exchange; ‘Tabula Rasa’ for Kaunas Photography Gallery, ‘Surface Tension: New Process Based Photography’,‘Maud Sulter – Passion’ (co-curated); ‘Working the Border’, work by several Scottish photographers for the Carlisle Photo Festival; ‘Borderlands’ and ‘Kaunas Street Photography’ as part of the Lithuanian Photography Season in Scotland; ‘What Presence: the Rock Photography of Harry Papadopoulos; and ‘Futureproof’ the annual showcase of new photography. Earlier curated projects include ‘Taking Liberties’ by John Hoppy Hopkins; ‘Jo Spence Photographer: Works from the Archive’; ‘Lost and Found’ – artists video installation from the 1980s;

 

EVA EICKER Curator – Photographers Gallery

Eva Eicker has worked at The Photographers’ Gallery since 2012 where she curates the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. Amongst others, she has worked at institutions such as C/O Berlin; Magnum Photos, London; Haus der Kunst, Munich; Hauser & Wirth, London and The Museum of Modern Art, New York City.  Since her Postgraduate studies in Cultural Anthropology (2006) at Ludwig-Maximilan University Munich as well as the MA in Photography and Urban Culture (2009) at Goldsmiths College, London, she focusses on social and cultural issues for critical engagement with contemporary photography. 

 

KAREN HARVEY Creative Director – Shutter Hub

Karen Harvey has a wide experience of working as an award-winning professional photographer and writer, exhibiting and curating, developing a professional practice, as well as running community arts organisations, charities and businesses. Karen has recently been a judge for the e-Luminate Photography Competition, Worldwide Pinhole Prize and at FORMAT International Photography Festival. She has delivered talks and Professional Development sessions across the UK in Universities and Colleges as well as at PhotoMasters and the FORMAT International Photography Festival.

 

YANNIS KATSARIS Post Production Editor – Panos Pictures

Yiannis Katsaris is a visual artist based in London, UK. Yiannis produces photography, video and lighting design for personal and collaborative projects and is the Post Production Editor at Panos Pictures agency. His photography has featured in solo and group exhibitions, including IKON gallery (Birmingham), Proud Archivist, Reading Room and The Hellenic Centre (London), Photosynkiria (Thessaloniki). He has worked as a Director of Photography for music videos and films and he has created video art installations and lighting design for numerous theatre and opera productions in venues in the UK and across Europe including Sadler’s Wells, Arcola Theatre and Riverside Studios (London), Avignon Festival (France), National Theatre of Northern Greece (Thessaloniki), International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama (Cyprus), Alma Theatre (Athens). Yiannis has led photography workshops at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art Architecture and Design (Metropolitan University) and the University of East London. He is the visual manager of Operaview and works often with directors, designers, producers, actors and musicians in art, editorial and commercial commissions.

 

HILARY KIRBY Head of Pictures, Life & Art – Financial Times

Hilary Kirby is the Picture Editor of the Life & Arts section of the FT. She studied Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art.

 

MELANIE PHILIPPE – World Photography Organisation

Melanie's career in the creative industries has taken her from film to television, and now, with her true passion: photography. Melanie has a keen eye for discovering and promoting the work of emerging and professional photographers, serving on the judging committees for United Photo Industries' THE FENCE and Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year, among others. Following seven years with the World Photography Organisation, Melanie currently serves as Marketing & Communications Director. From London to New York, Sao Paolo to Shanghai, she has cultivated a large network of photographers, whilst developing marketing and communications strategies for the international photographic audience.

 

DAGMAR SEELAND Picture Editor – Stern Magazine.

STERN mostly assigns photojournalists and portrait photographers from London & the rest of the UK, but the spectrum of commissioned work has widened over the years to include documentary and fashion photography. We enjoy discovering new talent and giving it the opportunity to be featured in the magazine.

Timing... Capture a unique moment that lasts a fraction of a second or much longer, but miss it and it's gone for good. Combined with light we have the joy of photography for me. Now thanks to technology many more people can capture moments in life, doing more to explore their creativity and express it more freely. When I was at college we discussed visual literacy comparing it to reading text, literacy with word. Images or any other creative medium help inspire the imagination and push perceptive boundaries, open or alter minds. Visual creativity is a very powerful tool indeed! Having studied and explored photography for years, currently I am a photo editor with The Guardian and Observer newspaper and websites. I look forward to view your views on life in photography!
