They used the slogan ‘They Shall Not Pass’ to face the police who used horses and battons to try and clear a way through. The people won and this year the 80th anniversary of this battle is being commemorate.
An exhibition of original photographs and other memorabilia together with a programme of events including interviews with the still surviving 1936 veterans, music, poetry, book readings, talks and film is presented by the Cable Street Group to remember this occasion.
On Sunday 9 October a March to Cable Street and a Rally at the Cable Street Mural will be held, and the Idea Store Watney Street will be open to the public. With the recent rise in violent and vicious racist and fascist activity this anniversary honours the brave men and women from 1936 and demonstrates our determination to confront all forms of racism and fascism today.

The fate of this ‘streets in the sky’ development has long been fashioned by the baleful metaphors of ‘sink estate’ and ‘concrete monstrosity’, wherein residents are allotted only clichéd roles. Against such representations, and the social cleansing agenda they serve, Kois Miah’s images chronicle the complex lives, emotions, and routines that animate this extraordinary Brutalist estate. http://projects.socialsciences.manchester.ac.uk/concrete-dreams/ |

29 Sep - 12 Oct - Preview 29 Sept 7.30-10pm THE DISINHERITED - Photomonth Launch Exhibition Alina Kisina, Heather McDonough, Ed Thompson PHOTOMONTH EAST LONDON 2016 launches with The Disinherited, a show of specially commissioned work by three talented and culturally aware photographic artists: Alina Kisina, Heather McDonough and Ed Thompson, curated by Maggie Pinhorn Director of Photomonth East London.
Each photographer has chosen to follow a subject of social significance. The main title of the show is inspired by an early work of Picasso painted in 1903*.
Children of Vision Alina Kisina a Ukrainian born artist has documented the children of a special school of art for the blind/partially sighted in Kiev. In a touching and immensely positive project she uses the medium of portraiture to transcend the stereotypes of ‘ability’ and ‘disability’ to illustrate how creativity can transform lives.
Leave to Remain Heather McDonough found that volunteering in the French refugee camps led to a steady stream of encounters – with residents whose fragile lives have unravelled, fragmented and reconstituted in a remote and strange place – and with objects, whether waiting for their purpose to be fulfilled or lying spent and discarded, or else in limbo, useless and abandoned.
Big Red Ed Thompson chose to write a visual essay on homelessness. ‘Big Red’ is the story of Stuart whose circumstances led him to turn his back on the stresses of London living in favour of a nomadic existence in his Big Red van. Ed embedded himself with Stuart to capture his uncomfortable but optimistic life.

11 Oct - 07 Jan - Opening party Thursday 20 October, 6-7.30pm BRICK LANE BORN: SOME PHOTOS, 1983-1989 Raju Vaidyanathan A lifelong resident of Brick Lane, Raju Vaidyanathan took up black-and-white photography as a keen young amateur more than thirty years ago, documenting day-to-day life in his neighbourhood. But he couldn’t afford to do anything with his thousands of negatives, and so these images were never seen - until 2015 when Raju enrolled in an Idea Store Learning photography class at the Shadwell Centre and began to develop and print his own work. As the first Asian photographer to capture Spitalfields as it was in the early to mid 1980s, Raju’s camera provides insider access to a place and community which seems ever more distant today. A selection of Raju’s photographs will be exhibited for the first time at Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives as part of Photomonth 2016.
EVENTS Thursday 20 October, 6.00-7.30pm Exhibition launch: Asian youth culture in the ‘80s East End The launch of the exhibition will feature a public discussion exploring the various forms of Asian youth culture in Tower Hamlets in the early 1980s including music, dance, and football. Speakers include Raju Vaidyanathan, Hasina Zaman, Faruk Shamsher, Ansar Ahmed Ullah, Bodrul Islam, Taryn Khanam and Sultana Qureshi.
Saturday 15 October 2016, 10am-1pm Introduction to Street Photography with Michael Wayne Plant Join Michael Wayne Plant for an introduction to street photography. During the session, he will explain the art of capturing everyday life on the streets and give an introductory workshop followed by a photography walk in the local Stepney area, practising some of the ideas explored in the workshop. Saturday 22 October, 12.30-2.30pm Guided walk: Brick Lane Born Raju Vaidyanathan and Taryn Khanam will lead a walk around Spitalfields, visiting the places photographed by Raju in the 1980s and providing a brief history of the area. Places are free but you must book your place in advance via localhistory@towerhamlets.gov.ukor 020 7364 1290.
Saturday 19 November, 2.00-4.00pm Discussion: Identity and culture in the internet age: the Cockney + Asian experience The proliferation of historic East End photos shared on social media and websites has revived debates around identity for Cockneys and Asians. Raju will be joined by Sultana Qureshi, Con Maloney (Isle of Dogs, Then & Now) and Taryn Khanam (www.britbangla.net) for a lively discussion and chance to look at more photos.

07 Oct - 22 Oct - Preview: 6 Oct 6pm-9pm THIS ENGLAND Colin O'Brien
‘This England’ is the last collection of black-and-white images created for an exhibition by acclaimed local photographer Colin O’Brien, who chronicled the life of ordinary people in London and beyond, in every decade from the post-war years until be died suddenly on 19 August 2016. He chose in this new compilation to reflect his longstanding but heightened post-Brexit interest in capturing life and location beyond his home city and throughout his country, England. Colin had already selected pictures for this exhibition but he planned to travel to both Liverpool and Newcastle to take some new ones. Sadly, these cannot feature; however, for each picture in his previous exhibition at Unit G Gallery, ‘East London Life”, Colin relished in explaining a ‘last of’ story; an irony that would not be lost on him if he could be present.

23 Jul - 08 Jan TALES Sonya Hurtado This series of twelve images by Hackney based photographer Sonya Hurtado explores the imaginary world of childhood. A world where children encounter and must navigate complex feelings of isolation, fear and despair. Set in the context of fairy tales and children’s stories, the images are conceived almost like paintings, full of colour and vibrancy. With inspiration from surrealism, film and much more, the manipulation of shadow, light and colour creates a playful and at times almost sinister atmosphere. http://www.sonyahurtado.co.uk/ |
