Kathryn Geels

The Transaction is about people in India whose work is integrated into public spaces. Kathryn tasked herself with one job: to get them to smile, bearing teeth, for the camera. Geoff Chaplin, Hamish Stewart

Rivers, Churches and gum prints – two photographers take a personal view of London

Geoff Chaplin presents digital HDR images of London church ceilings and gum print portraits. Gum prints are made on watercolour paper and have a nostalgic painterly appearance, suited to reproduction of old images or making images appear old.

Inspired by Iain Sinclair’s London walks, Hamish Stewart takes us on psychogeographical journey along the Lea River – an evolving urban landscape.

80th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF CABLE STREET

On the 4th October 1936 the people of the East End of London won a famous victory when they came together tp stop Oswald Mosley and his Blackshirt fascists from marching through Cable Street in Stepney, then a predominantly Jewish area. They used the slogan ‘They Shall Not Pass’ to face the police who used horses and battons to try and clear a way through. The people won and this year the 80th anniversary of this battle is being commemorate.

An exhibition of original photographs and other memorabilia together with a programme of events including interviews with the still surviving 1936 veterans, music, poetry, book readings, talks and film is presented by the Cable Street Group to remember this occasion.

On Sunday 9 October a March to Cable Street and a Rally at the Cable Street Mural will be held, and the Idea Store Watney Street will be open to the public. With the recent rise in violent and vicious racist and fascist activity this anniversary honours the brave men and women from 1936 and demonstrates our determination to confront all forms of racism and fascism today.

HIDDEN BEAUTY

Sandra Jordan

LANG presents 'Hidden Beauty' by Sandra Jordan. The proliferation of Brutalist and Modernist buildings carry a special attraction to Jordan – whose unconventional notions of beauty respond to the societal median of aesthetics. Reaching beyond the accepted standardised prettification, her images of buildings are more akin to portraiture than architecture.

COLLISON

Tim Mills, Nathan Vidler, David Hadley

Displayed in the unconventional venue of three Camden pub toilets, Collision explores the boundary lines existing between man and nature. Three photographers approach this from different angles, investigating instances in our everyday environment where lines become blurred and the perceived limits between ourselves and nature are less easy to define.

LIVED BRUTALISM: PORTRAITS AT ROBIN HOOD GARDENS

Kois Miah

Photographs recording the lives of residents at Robin Hood Gardens in the estate’s last years before demolition. The fate of this ‘streets in the sky’ development has long been fashioned by the baleful metaphors of ‘sink estate’ and ‘concrete monstrosity’, wherein residents are allotted only clichéd roles. Against such representations, and the social cleansing agenda they serve, Kois Miah’s images chronicle the complex lives, emotions, and routines that animate this extraordinary Brutalist estate.

THE DISINHERITED - Photomonth Launch Exhibition

Alina Kisina, Heather McDonough, Ed Thompson

PHOTOMONTH EAST LONDON 2016 launches with The Disinherited, a show of specially commissioned work by three talented and culturally aware photographic artists: Alina KisinaHeather McDonough and Ed Thompson, curated by Maggie Pinhorn Director of Photomonth East London.

Each photographer has chosen to follow a subject of social significance. The main title of the show is inspired by an early work of Picasso painted in 1903*.

Children of Vision

Alina Kisina a Ukrainian born artist has documented the children of a special school of art for the blind/partially sighted in Kiev. In a touching and immensely positive project she uses the medium of portraiture to transcend the stereotypes of ‘ability’ and ‘disability’ to illustrate how creativity can transform lives.

Leave to Remain

Heather McDonough found that volunteering in the French refugee camps led to a steady stream of encounters – with residents whose fragile lives have unravelled, fragmented and reconstituted in a remote and strange place – and with objects, whether waiting for their purpose to be fulfilled or lying spent and discarded, or else in limbo, useless and abandoned.

Big Red

Ed Thompson chose to write a visual essay on homelessness. ‘Big Red’ is the story of Stuart whose circumstances led him to turn his back on the stresses of London living in favour of a nomadic existence in his Big Red van. Ed embedded himself with Stuart to capture his uncomfortable but optimistic life.

WELL HEELED - Dougie Wallace

Dougie Wallace had had enough of people chasing him down the road, demanding he delete the picture he just took and turned his camera to the nation's best friend. Dogs like having their picture taken and their proud owners are only too happy to oblige.

BRICK LANE BORN: SOME PHOTOS, 1983-1989

Raju Vaidyanathan

A lifelong resident of Brick Lane, Raju Vaidyanathan took up black-and-white photography as a keen young amateur more than thirty years ago, documenting day-to-day life in his neighbourhood. But he couldn’t afford to do anything with his thousands of negatives, and so these images were never seen - until 2015 when Raju enrolled in an Idea Store Learning photography class at the Shadwell Centre and began to develop and print his own work.

As the first Asian photographer to capture Spitalfields as it was in the early to mid 1980s, Raju’s camera provides insider access to a place and community which seems ever more distant today.

A selection of Raju’s photographs will be exhibited for the first time at Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives as part of Photomonth 2016.

THIS ENGLAND

Colin O'Brien

‘This England’ is the last collection of black-and-white images created for an exhibition by acclaimed local photographer Colin O’Brien, who chronicled the life of ordinary people in London and beyond, in every decade from the post-war years until be died suddenly on 19 August 2016. He chose in this new compilation to reflect his longstanding but heightened post-Brexit interest in capturing life and location beyond his home city and throughout his country, England. Colin had already selected pictures for this exhibition but he planned to travel to both Liverpool and Newcastle to take some new ones. Sadly, these cannot feature; however, for each picture in his previous exhibition at Unit G Gallery, ‘East London Life”, Colin relished in explaining a ‘last of’ story; an irony that would not be lost on him if he could be present.

TALES

Sonya Hurtado

This series of twelve images by Hackney based photographer Sonya Hurtado explores the imaginary world of childhood. A world where children encounter and must navigate complex feelings of isolation, fear and despair. Set in the context of fairy tales and children’s stories, the images are conceived almost like paintings, full of colour and vibrancy. With inspiration from surrealism, film and much more, the manipulation of shadow, light and colour creates a playful and at times almost sinister atmosphere.
